In the face of this agressive situation, a large-scale intergovernmental cooperation has emerged in the form of la Programme d’action mondial pour la protection du milieu marin contre la pollution due aux activites terrestres (PAM).

We also need a new vision and a renewed vigilance: the world needs to become a cleaner and greener place for future generations, a more livable and healthier planet!

To help us do this, we must understand the impact of our actions on the ocean. This includes a better understanding of the chemistry of anthropogenic pollution.

Moreover, we must be able to predict the effects of such actions and their consequences.

Our researches in this field should also be able to identify the most efficient methods for reducing our impacts and for generating sustainable solutions.

For example, we can use eco-ressources a replacement for plastic, such as paper or wood; or we can find alternatives to current consumption patterns that are more ecological and responsible.

In this way, we can contribute a significant reduction in the amount of wastes that enter the ocean.

We should also be able to develop technologies that allow us to recycle or reuse wastes in an environmentally friendly manner and without damaging the environment, such as biodegradable plastics, compostable tyres or recycled glass bottles.

In this direction, we can rely on a multi-disciplinary approach that involves a number of scientists, as well as experts and policy makers from different fields and sectors of the economy. These are people who can help us to create a more healthy, livable and sustainable ocean!
